 MEDIA RELEASE
 23 OCTOBER 1998
 IMMEDIATE
 EPAU MUST OBSERVE DEMOCRATIC PROCEDURES

The press statement by Epau on the proposed marketing bill is an irresponsible and disturbing piece of work especially when there are many
effective channels where they can raise their concerns on any matter that affects they livelihood as farmers.

Epau was given the proposed draft at our bi-monthly meeting with them, and we requested them to submit their input after they have studied
and discussed the document.

We are still waiting for that input, but it looks as if they have decided to make their input to the media.

We understand that for other people, these democratic processes are new to them, but we plead with Epau to refrain from media bashing, as
this raises unnecessary tensions.

We are still awaiting input of all stakeholders including Epau, before we can publicly defend the contents of the bill because we want
everybody involved in the marketing of agricultural products to own the final product. Until then we reserve our comment until we are
through with the consultation process.
